Save The Dates – Yea or Nay?

At first this kind of seems like a no brainer question, right? Of course we send out "Save the Dates", how else will people know we're getting married? Well let's start off with the many reasons why we send a "Save the Date"

Question 1: Why Send A Save The Date?

- Yes, so people know you are getting married
- To use those awesome Engagement Photos!
- So that your guests have enough notice about your event so that they don't make other plans on your wedding day

That's truly the long and short of it. So if you're wanting people to know this wedding is going on send them a "Save the Date". If they are in your "Second String" I might hold off on sending this part of the overall invitation suite. If you are still undecided about if this guest will get a plus one be sure to address the envelope to the main recipient only.

Question 2: Who gets a Sate the Date?

- Your Bridal Party
- Both sets of Parents and Grandparents
- People who will definately be getting an invitation to your wedding

I know it seems pretty obvious that your bridal party, parents and, grandparents would come to your wedding but they have lives too and need to plan things ahead of time just like everyone else so do them the courtsey of sending them a "Save the Date". Plus if it has your engagement photo on it they are going to be so excited to put it up on the fridge - I mean come on, look how cute you guys are!

Question 3: Why wouldn't I send a Save the Date?

Honestly, there are a few reasons to opt out of the "Save the Date" feature. A lot of people consider cutting this due to costs, and I see where you are coming from. But, with the expectation of a "Save the Date" as a heads up for your wedding date people are going to be relying on this little nugget of information and they don't have to be the quality or expense of your final invitation suite so I say don't skip them to save a few bucks. For me there is really only one reason to bypass the "Save the Date" all together and that is time. Plain and simple.

I had a client a couple of weeks ago and we threw together their event in 40 days. I made a digital file for the invitation and we sent that out via email and text to all of the 20 guests so they could have something to reference when they got in the car and needed to put an address in the GPS. It was very simple and worked really well for our purposes but it also tied back into the theme of the wedding overall.

So unless you're getting married in a month you've got plenty of time to go through the process of sending out that little call to action - your very own "Save the Date"!
